I've not read the original book or seen the movie, so I was going in blind. Wells's "The Island of Doctor Moreau" in the Yucatn Peninsula. Loosely based on The Island of Doctor Moreau, this excellent book takes place in 19th century Mexico and focuses on Carlota, the doctor's daughter. Wells's method of creating creatures involves vivisection, and the book is a first-person narrative told in the form of what is, essentially, one long letter. The theme that has been transferred form the original Dr Moreau is the creation of human-animal hybrids, although even in this, I feel that the intent is to use them as a metaphor to explore the questions of tribalism, identity and belonging.
